Understanding Fractions
Fractions represent a part of a whole. They are written as two numbers separated by a line: a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number). For example, in 1/2, 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
To add or subtract fractions, they must have a common denominator. If they don't, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators to make them the same. Once they have the same denominator, you can add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
For example: 1/4 + 2/4 = (1+2)/4 = 3/4.
Mixed Fractions
A mixed fraction is a whole number combined with a proper fraction, like 1 1/2. This calculator also supports operations with mixed fractions.
