How a clinometer reading works

A clinometer measures the angle between a horizontal line and the direction you are looking.

With a known horizontal distance, trigonometry turns that angle into a height change through an( heta)= rac{ ext{opposite}}{ ext{adjacent}}.

That makes the tool useful for roof pitch, hill grade, tree height estimates, and quick surveying checks.

Reading tips

  • Use elevation when looking upward and depression when looking downward.
  • The slope percentage is 100an(heta)100 an( heta).
  • A larger horizontal run magnifies the same angle into a bigger rise or drop.
